There are over 400 varieties of Japanese Maple, this makes the choice bewildering. The first thing to do is decide what size of tree you want and then the leaf colour and the leaf form.

Japanese Maples are quite delicate looking small or large trees with one of the best foliage, size varies considerably depending on the variety - from 1m (3ft) to 30m (100ft) tall. They are native to Japan, northeast China and Korea.

In their natural habitat they are usually shaded by larger trees and so prefer partial shade. Having said this, a few will tolerate full sun but should be sheltered from strong winds.

Japanese Maple Trees prefer a part shade position which does not get the sun in the afternoon. They don't like competition from other strong rooted plants and trees. To avoid the need to water too often, choose a position that is moist but well drained.

Planting should be done any time during the winter and early spring months, October to December being the best months.

Japanese Maples can be damaged by water-logging which damages the fine root system. To avoid this make sure you choose the correct planting position. Late spring frosts can damage the leaves, in this case, snip off the badly damaged areas of the leaves and the plant should recover in a month or so.

Japanese Maple Trees should be fine without any pruning as they will form their own natural shape
